5. Either Watch a TED Talk, read a science article, or experience something new. Throughout the year, I will be encouraging you to seek out new and interesting information outside of school on a topic we are studying. The goal is to learn something you didn’t know before that you think is interesting. To start us off, the topic is WIDE OPEN. Doesn;t even have to be science this time. While I am open to creative options, here are the three suggested areas:

a) TED Talk. Go to https://www.ted.com/talks and pick from the gajillion videos of cool people talking about cool things. Pick something that looks really interesting. Watch it then fill out this three question form. TED Talks form

b) Science Article. ONline or hardcopy, read an article from any credible science news outlet – Science Alert, Scientific American, Discovery, National Geographic, Popular Science, Astronomy Today, any research journal – and fill out the TED Talks form, just replace “video” with “article.”

c) A new experience. Got someone in your neighborhood who is a beekeeper? A welder? Other cool thing? Ask them to show you what they do. Go to a museum and learn about something you don’t know about. Or ask someone at the museum if there is someone who can show you what they study/do at the museum. (Behind the scenes tour are AWESOME.) Explore a phenomena you’ve observed but don’t understand and make observations, do some research. (Insect behavior on your porch, an odd smell in the creek after it rains…) Ask your parents about something they know about in science that they think is cool. Fill out the same Ted Talks form, just replace “video” with “(whatever you did).”

6. . Introduction to Chemistry through AgS Lab – Filled in during class, then taught to a parent who signs off on it.  An Introduction to Elements and Compounds by looking at Chemical Reactions

7. Scientific Method Study Guide. Page one is helpful definitions you can use for page two. On page two, read the scenario then label the parts of the scientific method in it by answering the questions below it. You can either label directly on the text or write what each step/part of the scientific method is in the story on your own paper. Ex. What is the problem? The problem is, “Does eating garbonzo beans cause madness?” The Scientific Method -Scenario

We’ll do it in class Monday so you can have a baseline for what you need to study for Friday’s test. Atoms Scientific Method History Isotopes Electrons Study guide

3. Evidence of Study. What you did to actively study for Friday’s test. Reading your notes is passive, so while it’s a good place to start, it’s not enough to help you remember or understand completely. You have to DO something with your notes. Make flash cards, quiz with a friend over the phone, make up your own test questions and answers, have a parent quiz you, draw pictures of the ideas, label diagrams, make up silly songs with the information as lyrics, or get some friends and play “Mother May I?” where you run if you correctly answer study guide questions. (If you are feeling antisocial, you can line up stuffed animals or action figures and have them play as you answer for them….whatever works for you.) Bring in either what you made or a piece of paper with these things on it:

  1. What you did to study
  2. How long you studied
  3. Parent signature

You don’t need to get parent signatures if you bring in the thing you made/did to study. This is just for intangible study forms like quizzing over the phone or red light green light.

Due 9/11

1. Word Wall – Electrons and Other Small Things. You can do this on flash cards, use the foldable, or use your own format as long as you have the three required parts: 1) write the word, 2) the book or online definition, then 3) “show you know,” – do something to show me you understand the definition.( Example include write it in your own words, draw a picture with labels, or give me an example.) Word Wall Electrons 9-11

Saaaaay…looking for another format for Word Wall that works better for you? There are a bajillion of them out there. Try searching “vocabulary template” in Google Images. Boom, there are a bajillion forms to choose from. Ask me if you need help picking one that’s right for you.

2. The Study Guide from #4 last week. (see below)

3. Periodic Table Basics. For this Friday, you just have to have filled in the last two pages – the periodic table squares. Don’t lose the other sheets – we’ll use them next week. Periodic table square basics

Online Quiz taken in class Friday on the structure of the atom and the history of atom model and theory development. You may retake this quiz online as many times as you wish for one week.  Whatever grade (better or worse – the most recent replaces past grades!) is in the system as of midnight Thursday is what is recorded.

Due 9/4

1. Word Wall – Atomic Structure and Intro to Chemistry. You can do this on flash cards, use the foldable, or use your own format as long as you have the three required parts: 1) write the word, 2) the book or online definition, then 3) “show you know,” – do something to show me you understand the definition.( Example include write it in your own words, draw a picture with labels, or give me an example.)  Word Wall – Atomic Structure and History

Because the test is Wednesday. …and if you haven’t already done it… 2. Study Island – Fossils and Geologic Time. Due noon Saturday, 2/7.  StudyIsland Login 3. (optional) ID the New Fossil Contest! (Optional, but hey, there is the glory and the candy….) The heavy, meter-ish long bone found in the junk closet in the basement of Main Building remains unidentified. Just like in real life, there is no answer key, no authority to tell you of you are right or wrong.  So, just like in real science, you may do research and post your findings (pictures and rationale, your name on back) for why you think the bone is what it is for peer review. Students in all classes will discuss the evidence and vote on the convincing evidence. Winners get an entire bag of Jolly Ranchers. Submissions due 2/18, voting will be 2/19.        Due 2/13 (You have the option of turning in items 3 and 4 Monday, 2/16, since the idea with tiered learning is you go at your own pace. I’d rather you do it over the week so I can help you and you don’t get overwhelmed trying to finish late Sunday night, so the goal is to get it done by Friday.) Tiered learning week. Work is done in class over the week but ANY OF THIS CAN BE DONE AT HOME. You must complete them in order.  1.  Notes and Summation – At your own speed, use the class (or home) computer to take notes (worksheet given) on geologic dating and evidence. Powerpoint for notes —>  Geologic_Dating 2014 Worksheet for the notes –> Geologic Dating 2014 Cornell Notes form (I will help with the summation part near the end of the week to make sure everybody understood the material.)   2. Word Wall –  Word Wall – Geologic Evolution Yes, there are 24 words there. Breathe…we are using class time.   3. NC in the Miocene Fossil Lab – Examine samples of fossil dirt from Aurora NC to, find, measure and record fossils. Data should be recorded in your own table, added to the class table, and analysis given. More details and resources available in class. Fossil Dirt may be taken home to work through, but it can be messy – just a heads up to have a space that’s good with mud.

Instructions – also posted at stations. –> Fossil Lab – Miocene Data Sheet – (this is what gets turned in) –> Data Sheet – Miocene Fossil Lab Color fossil ID pages and lots of info (for identifying what you have found)–> Aurora Fossil Museum PDF-Teach or go to the Aurora Fossil Museum Site or go to the more detailed collector site (requires a little more clicking) at Elasmo

4. Taphonology Cold Case. Pick any three fossils in the room. Arrange the fossils , 2D or 3D, and sketch their placement. Using what you have learned about fossils, create a cold case story that describes the story of their fnal days and what happened to their bodies. You need to include: 1) the setting: what biotic (living) and aboitic (nonliving – geology, climate, atmosphere, water…) factors were in it, major events or species relationships that were involved 2) the characters (your three plant and animal fossils – describe what they were like physically and their motivations and issues) 3) and what happened before they died that lead to their deaths and why their bodies are positioned the way they now. NOTES:

  1. Not all dead things stay put. Remember, water, other animals, and geologic processes can move them.
  2. Fossils at different depthswould likely have been deposited at different times.
  3. Feel free to use a little creative license, but make it scientifically defendable.
  4. It’s okay to name a megalodon shark George.
  5. Story should include your crime scene sketch.
  6. You can write your story as

-a narrative or -give the short version (“Col. Mustard, in the swamp, with a cycad frond” type explanation of the crime scene) then explain how you know what happened. —— ID the New Fossil Contest! It’s not in the file so it must have either been a day we didn’t have one or it was written on the board. Check with a classmate who may have that day.

Layer correlation:tracing rock strata from one area to another by using the Principle of Lateral Continuity or by relating the fossils of the two areas using the Principle of Faunal Succession. πŸ™‚

Just google “subscript definition science” and you get kinds of pages that want to help you.

“sub” means under, “script” means writing. A subscript is the writing underneath; it’s the little 2 down there in H2O. (That 2 should be lower than the H and O but this website doesn’t let me type subscripts!) A subscript tell you how many atoms there are in the compound, as in, there are 2 atoms of H in H2O.

      Hi Kevin,
That sounds like a word processing program issue – what I have on my computer may not match what you have on yours. Just let me know which weeks’ word wall you need and I can just cut and paste them directly in an email to you.

Hope you are enjoying the snow days!

      Hi Mya,

A “sink” is something that absorbs and hold a lot of something. In this case, a carbon sink is something that absorbs and hold a lot of carbon, like the ocean.

Absolutely.(Btw – for the geologic timescale part, remember that you just have to redo it on blank sheet. Use the link to the study guide answer key if you need help.)

It’s a way of showing electron location, more specifically, how many electrons are in which clouds in which levels.
      1s2 2s2 2p4 = 2 electrons in an s cloud in level 1, 2 electrons in an s cloud in level 2, and 4 electrons in p clouds in level 2.

Hello, with regards to your message, “ALL CLASSES: NOW DUE MONDAY! (This was a lot of work and we lost time with the awards ceremony. IF you have it to turn in Friday that’s great, but no penalty for lateness if you turn it in Monday.” I was just wondering if this is for all the homework this week or just for one specific thing?

The whole smash can come in Monday since people chose different items to work on first. You can turn in anything you are done with Friday, though.
